the price of youth Reviews
Fan Tasker is the daughter of a disreputable father who owns a dilapidated inn at a secluded New Jersey backwater. She longs to escape her humdrum life and is willful, difficult, and generally unfriendly towards her gossipy village neighbours.Willis King is a journalist from the city who spends the summer convalescing at the inn. He forms a tentative relationship with Fan which may develop into more, but sets local tongues wagging. The Price of Youth is an unusually downbeat and realistic romance for the time it was written, short on incident but completely naturalistic and authentic, with unremarkable yet very real parochial characters. The gossips do harm, but they are not bad people by any means. Fan is a convincing portrait of a young woman whose personality has been hemmed in by a tawdry upbringing. She's no diamond in the rough. This was an early novel by Margery Williams, who later became famous as a writer of children's stories. Here she writes for gritty, sensitive young women, and writes very well.
